Last night we were driving home from a very expensive trip to Sam's club but I think we are set with diapers for at least this month. Agh! So my phone rang with an unfamiliar Utah number. Unless I have your number in my phone from Utah I usually do not get calls from there. Anyway it was a young guy from BYU calling from the alumni association asking for money to donate to their scholarship fund. I have done that for a few years now and was glad to keep doing it....chris not loving the idea of giving more money to BYU-"we pay our tithing already don't we!" does not always know!!
Anyway, the kid gave me the spiel and then asked a few questions about where I was living, updating my information etc. Then he said "what was your major?" Marriage, Family and Human Development I responded and then there was a long pause then he said "well...so I have to fill in this section about work but obviously you are just a mom and not working!"
WHAT!!!
So wrong for many reasons. It is too bad that our society thinks being a mom is not that prestigious. I would hope more from a church university that encourages people to raise children in a FAMILY!
And second, I changed my major because I enjoyed learning about child development and family processes. I spent four years getting a degree in a field that is really important to encourage families to work together and have worked in this field ever since!
I politely responded with Chris yelling in my ear what I should say!! And what I really wanted to say!! But politely said that I have a career and have been working in this field for years and in fact I am not a mother and would appreciate him mailing me the information rather than talking to him any more.
This is not the only time and I am sure not the last time someone will belittle the field of Family Life Education. Someone once commented that I had gotten my degree in four years to learn how to change diapers. Cool!!
In both cases I just laughed....but I am grateful for the information that I learned in college and how that is still growing as I read more, get more training and enjoy learning about all kinds of topics with families, children and their interactions. I feel like I am making a difference in the lives of children, families and hopefully my own with the knowledge that I gained not only from my degree but from experience as well.
The Family a Proclamation to the world "calls upon responsible citizens and officers of government everywhere to promote those measures designed to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society."
That means everyone not just in our own families!! Be careful not to judge others and the life and choices that they make. Love it.
on a lighter note!! Boo Boo has been with us for 2 months now and is growing and happy. We love every second of his sweetness.

You go, Lisa! Oh, what I would do to be "just" a mother! But I do hope that my work outside the home will influence the kids for good.
He's lucky he didn't get me on the other end of the phone. :)
Wow! I cannot believe that! I think you have an awesome career! It is so sad that people think that way.
